Obituary for Thomas "Birdman" Arthur Benson

Thomas “Birdman” Benson, 64, of Oxford, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at home.

He was the husband of Samantha Vulliet with whom he shared 37 years of marriage.

Born in Cleveland, OH, he was the son of Georgine L. Schajatovic Rossi of NC, father deceased.

He was a veteran of the US Navy and served on the USS Cochrane (DDG-2l) as a Gunners Mate G-3 mustering out in 1983.

Birdman worked for Amtrak on the wreck crew and as a car repairman at the Wilmington Shops; he then worked at the Bear Shops as a car repairman and finally at the Shops in Perryville, Md as a train inspector where he retired in 2014 after 40 years of service. He was known for mimicking bird sounds and nationality accents and his fellow workers could hear him all over the shops at any time.

Birdman loved History and as an independent civilian participated at Civil War reenactments. He especially enjoyed the Mountain Man time period and traveled to many states to partake in the
festivities.

He is survived by his wife; mother, Georgine Rossi and George Noullet of NC; his Godson, Aron Michael Ickes; his sister and brother-in-law Beth and Anthony Cotellese and their two children Nicholas and Taylor.

Birdman is also survived by his family here in Nottingham; Griselle and Jorge Colon along with
their children; Luis, Miguel and Danny Colon.

A Memorial Service will be held at 7 pm, Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. where friends and family may visit from 6-7 pm.

Interment will be private.
